The Upper Mustang Trek is the ultimate entry to the mysterious world of the Buddhist kingdom of Mustang, also described as Lo. Once forbidden and isolated from the rest of the world for decades, the district developed its distinctive culture and rich traditions closely tied to Tibetan heritage. This moderate, well-known trek passes through one of the driest regions of the Himalayas, Nepal.

The Upper Mustang trek is a fascinating trip that leads you to a vast, windswept country, an extension of the world, and the highest Tibetan plateau. You can relish amazing landscapes and high snowcapped peaks, including the Dhaulagiri, Nilgiri, Bhrikuti, Damodar, Mustang Himal & panoramic views of the Annapurna ranges.

Are you planning Your Trek to Upper Mustang?

Trek to Upper Mustang, a minimum of 18 days holiday starting in Kathmandu, and ending in Kathmandu, including your arrival and departure day in Nepal. The maximum high elevation that you can reach is 3820m  at Lo Manthang. This trip is neither easy nor challenging; it demands moderate fitness and a courageous mindset.

Mustang- commonly referred to as ‘the Upper Mustang’ is a dry river valley that runs north-south at the upper corner of the Annapurna Circuit. Culturally and geographically, it’s more similar to Tibet than to Nepal, and it once formed its kingdom, with its capital in Lo Manthang.

This is one of the best trekking destinations for a summer and monsoon trek in Nepal, thanks to its restricted region, cliff-faced landscapes, and the unique marshy beauty of Nepal.

Where can you start your trek to the Upper Mustang?

Jomsom is the starting point for almost all routes heading into the Upper Mustang region. Most trekkers choose to fly from Pokhara to Jomsom, as the 20-minute flight is the quickest option. However, there is a convenient direct bus service from Kathmandu to Jomsom, allowing travellers to relish the alluring landscape of Nepal. Be aware that the official checkpoint for the restricted region is located in Kagbeni, just north of Jomsom.

What can you expect from the Upper Mustang trek?

After a short scenic flight from Pokhara to Jomsom, your Upper Mustang Trek begins as you walk through the Kaligandaki River valley. This trek takes you into a gorge between amazing high red cliffs dotted with small caves, and passing through villages on the windswept terrain.

Various welcoming and stunning villages such as Marpha, Chimang gaun, Kagbeni, Samar, Syanboche, Ghami, Charang, and so on, crafted with traditional art, stand as a gateway to Lo Manthang. The serene and surging Rupse Jharana(waterfall), towering at a height of 300 meters (984 feet), attracts and adds joy to your trip. Nepal's sacred Hindu-Buddhist pilgrimage site, Muktinath temple, is situated at 3,800 meters, where 108 pure tap water purifies one's lifetime committed sins. You can explore and visit the astonishing, mysterious, 3-story natural Chunsi cave, where, in the 8th century, Guru Rinpoche blessed and purified the region through meditation.

Timeless Architecture and living history, built by King Ame Pal in the 15th century, this 4-story mud-brick palace situated at the heart of Lo Manthang cannot help but amaze and adorn you with mystical strength and beauty.

We will have a great time exploring interesting monasteries and villages enriched with old Bon and Tibetan Buddhism culture, and the return journey back to Jomsom, where this magnificent adventure to Upper Mustang concludes by taking a flight to Pokhara or a direct bus service to Kathmandu.

Reasons Why Upper Mustang Outshines Every Other Tour in Nepal.

Exclusivity and Seclusion:

Unlike the bustling trails of Nepal, Everest Base Camp, or Annapurna Circuit, Upper Mustang limits visitor numbers, ensuring a crowd-free experience. This limitation is brought through a special permit granted to only governmentally registered Nepali Trekking companies.

Surreal Landscapes:

The Upper Mustang tour takes you to dramatic red cliffs, wind-sculpted rocks, and innumerable mysterious caves that hold thousands of years of history.

Cultural Preservation:

Unlike other trails of Nepal, the Upper Mustang remains untouched and preserved via the Loba people upholding their ancient tradition. And this can be seen reflected in their way of living. The Tiji festival and 15th-century monasteries (Thubchen Gompa) are key thriving elements.

Lower Altitude Risks:

The maximum altitude you can gain is 3,840m (Lo Manthang), reducing acute mountain sickness. But in contrast to others, like Everest Base Camp, 5,364m, there is a high probability of altitude sickness.

Historical Trade Routes:

Along with the exploration of tombs and meditation cells along the trails. Starry Skies and Golden Hour Paradise.

When to Visit Upper Mustang: Pursue Perfect Weather and Vibrant Festivals?

Upper Mustang has a unique climate due to its location in Nepal’s Himalayan rain shadow, which makes the Upper Mustang an accessible year-round travel destination. Each season nurtures visitors with distinct experiences. Generally, the best time to visit Upper Mustang is the spring and autumn seasons, according to travelers.

The Spring Season:

Welcomes you with clear skies and panoramic views of the majestic Dhaulagiri and Annapurna ranges. What enhances it is a blossoming desert flora, including wildflowers and fields of buckwheat, creating an enchanting spectacle.

During the autumn season, the trails are dry with panoramic mountain vistas due to the monsoon clarity. This makes it the perfect time for motorbike enthusiasts and determined trekkers

The monsoon and Winter Seasons are not considered the best times or off-season to travel because of risky road access due to rain, frequent delays in flights, and limited availability of tea houses, respectively.

Is a permit required for the Upper Mustang Tour? If so, how can I obtain it?

Yes, permits are crucial documents you require before embarking on the adventurous voyage to the Upper Mustang of Nepal. According to the Department of Immigration of Nepal, travelers ought to carry 2 different permits, which include;

1) RESTRICTED AREA PERMIT (RAP): Due to the proximity to the Tibetan border and being classified under a restricted region, the Immigration Office of the Government of Nepal has issued a permit fare that costs US $ 500 per person for a 10-day duration. If the date is exceededan additional US$50 per day is charged per person.

2) ANNAPURNA CONSERVATION AREA PROJECT PERMIT (ACAP): The Upper Mustang lies within the Annapurna Conservation Area; therefore, before entering majestic Upper Mustang, trekkers must acquire an  Annapurna Conservation Area Project permit (ACAP) of US$27(for foreign travelers ), NRP 1,000 ( for SAARC nation trekkers), and NRP 200(for Nepali tourists) issued as per the Nepal Tourism Board Office. There is no additional fare or restriction on the length of time.

NOTE: These permits must be acquired through a governmentally registered Nepal Trekking company, ensuring an authentic and reliable experience. Remarkably, only a limited number of travelers (a few thousand) are granted this exclusive access each year. With our decades of expertise and passion for adventure, we have proudly guided thousands of trekkers to effortlessly obtain their permits upon arrival in Nepal.

What is the cost of the Upper Mustang trek?

The cost of the Upper Mustang trek varies according to the accessibility of the mode of transportation, accommodation throughout the journey, and the time of the season. We have arranged a budget-friendly trip considering all the factors, along with the required permits.

What should I pack for the Upper Mustang Trek?

In addition to enthusiasm and courage, there are various essential items you should pack before embarking on a journey to the Upper Mustang trek. Here’s a list of what to bring;

When you arrive at Pokhara, you will be greeted with beautiful views of many prominent mountain peaks like Dhaulagiri, Manaslu, Machhapuchhre (fish-tail), and the many mountain peaks of the Annapurna massif. Pokhara is a famous tourist hub of Nepal and the capital city of Tourism in Nepal. It is well-deserving of its popularity because it is a beautiful city located right beside the sapphire Phewa Lake. The lake is also popular for reflecting the sight of the Machhapuchhre Mountain on its surface. Overnight in a hotel.

Day04

Fly from Pokhara to Jomsom, and Trek to Kagbeni 5hrs Approx.

Today, as per Jomsom flight hours, our crew will transfer to Pokhara's domestic airport for a short scenic flight to Jomsom. Jomsom airport is located on the shelf of the Kali-Gandaki River. Jomsom is the headquarters town of the Mustang district.

After Jomsom's first-day trek begins on the Kali-Gandaki river valley, it winds through the windswept country. The afternoon will be very windy, after a few hours of a good walk with great views of Mt. Dhaulagiri, Nilgiri’s reach at Kagbeni village. A nice Tibetan village, and this village is the gateway to Upper Mustang, the forbidden city of Lo Manthang, located on the ancient Himalayan Caravan trade route to Tibet, with an overnight in a guesthouse.

Day05

Trek from Kagbeni to Chele Approx. 6-7hrs

Breakfast! Today, you'll embark on a trek to Chele, entering the restricted area of Upper Mustang. Be sure to have your permits ready for the checkpoint.

Start by walking to the eastern side of the Kali Gandaki riverbank, where you will ascend several ridges on your way to Tangbe village. After passing through Chhusang village (where you'll have lunch), you’ll cross the Kali Gandaki River and continue towards Chele village. This village is situated on a hill, and you'll need to climb a steep ascent to reach it; it is a moderately-sized settlement.

Trek Duration: The trek from Kagbeni to Chele is approximately 14 to 15 kilometers (9 to 10 miles) and will take about 6 to 7 hours to complete on foot. This section of the Upper Mustang trail is considered a moderate trek, guiding you through local villages like Tangbe and Chhusang, while offering views of the Kali Gandaki River valley and the surrounding mountains.

Day06

Trek to Syanbochen from Chele Approximately 6hrs

Enjoy breakfast! Our trek today is a little harder compared to what we experienced before. Trekking with an excellent view involves crossing two passes, Taklam La Pass (3624m) and Dajori La Pass (3735m), but you could enjoy great views of Tilicho, Yaskawa Kang, and Damodar Danda pass by Ramchung Cave, reach Samar village (Lunch), visit Chugsi Cave- a naturally beautiful historical site! After Chugsi Cave, you will be walking on a trail through a steep, barren land and a copper-red canyon. Moreover, you will gradually ascend to Syanboche overnight in the lodge.

Day07

Approximately 6 Hours Trek to Ghami from Syanbochen

Breakfast! The trek will be ascending in and out of the big side valleys of the Kali Gandaki. A hike up the hill will lead you to a pass, and after crossing the pass, a descent will take you to the village of Gheling. A way ahead is a bit tough, and you will be traversing Nyi La Pass (4,010m). We descend to Ghami, which is one of the biggest villages in the Lo region. It is beautiful with fields surrounding the entire village, as well as dotted with whitewashed mud and stone houses, canopied by an overhanging cliff overnight in Ghami.

Day08

Ghami to Charang-Tsarang Approximately 5hrs Trek

Our trek today begins with a descent through a rough and often slippery trail. We then cross a suspension bridge over the Ghami Khola and begin ascending. The pathway is beautiful with Mani walls along the trail. Next, we cross the Tsarang La Pass at (3,870m) and reach Tsarang village, which has a wonderful collection of statues and thangkas as the village lies atop the Charang Chu canyon with a huge fortress and a red gompa towards its east, but gorgeous views of the Rocky Mountains are known to mesmerize its onlookers. You'll see the beautiful trans-Himalaya ranges.

Day09

Approximately 4/5 hour Trek to Lo Mantang

Enjoy breakfast, then we begin our trek by descending into a canyon and crossing a river before beginning our uphill trek to Lo La Pass, which is at 3,950m.

From the top of the pass, we can admire the beautiful Lo Manthang village. From the pass, we descend to Lo Manthang, which is a beautiful walled village. Lo Manthang was once the capital of the kingdom of Lo.

From here, the views of the Himalayas include Nilgiri, Tilicho, Annapurna IBhrikuti Peak, and others. Visit the ancient temples and monasteries of Lo Manthang and get an insight into their rich culture and tradition overnight in Lo Langtang.

Day10

Visit Chhoser Cave back to Lo Manthang

Today, you will be exploring the ancient walled city of Lo Manthang, which was founded in the 1380s by Ame Pal. Lo Manthang has around 150 houses. Tall whitewashed brick and mud walls, gompas or monasteries, and the King’s Palace are the main attractions of Lo Manthang. The five-story King’s Palace is the oldest structure in the walled city and was built around 1400. The King’s palace is situated in the middle of the city.

The King and Queen reside in the palace; despite mostly being ceremonial Kings, villages respect and consult the king on various matters. Further, you will be visiting ancient Gompas.

Visit the famous Champa Lhakang, which features a large statue of Buddha and walls painted with Mandalas. Also, visit a beautiful hilltop Gompa called Namgyal Gompa. The monastery holds social, religious, and legal significance. Namgyal Gompa also functions as a local courthouse. Visit the 15th-century Thubchen Gompa with a big red assembly hall.

Also, pay a visit to Choprang Gompa, locally known as New Gompa, and get an insight into local culture and tradition. Moreover, Tsechen Shedrubling Monastic School, a part of the Monastic Museum, trains young monks from the area. You can visit Chhoser Cave, which will be a personal choice. Explore all the details better, in option: if you take private transportation to Chooser Cave, you will have more time to explore around Lo Manthang.

Day11

Approx. 8hrs Trek to Yara from Lo Manthang

Breakfast! Today you will be climbing up a glacial valley that offers an amazing view of reddish-brown colored Lo Manthang. Enjoy the stunning view of hills with farmland on the riverside and stop for lunch at the Dhi village.

Further, you will be crossing a river and walking alongside the river on your way to Yara. If you trek in the dry season, you will get to enjoy the stunning natural sandy castle from the top of the Yara hills. It is quite a long day, a descending downhill trek through a beautiful river valley, worth making an overnight stop at Yara-Ghara. In the afternoon, it could be possible to visit Luri Gompa by taking a motorcycle or private transfer at an additional cost of the trek package.

Day12

Trek from Yara to Tangge 8hrs Approx.

You will be walking away from the high winding path of Yara to Tangbe/Tangge. The route leads you to Dhechaeng Khola, which originates from the Damodar Kunda. You will be walking on a path that will take you to a little stream of melting ice.

After crossing the stream, you will reach the DHI town and hike further, and you will see centuries-old sandy precipices before reaching Tangbe, a small town. It's a very long day walk; you will feel like a real trekking trip to the Lo Manthang-Upper Mustang trek and see the spectacular view of the Himalayas.

Day13

Approximately 8-9hrs Trek from Tangge to Chhusang

Early breakfast! Today you will be trekking for a longer time than before. Rise early in the morning and prepare for a long trek. You will be climbing steps, crossing a suspension bridge, and following the right side of the trail on your way to Yak Khola.

Moreover, you will be crossing the PA pass situated at 4,185 meters, which is the highest point of the Upper Mustang Lo Manthang Trek. Savor the stunning views of the Himalayas from the top before heading down.

The trail descends, and you will be walking on rugged terrain, so walk cautiously to avoid injuries. Savor the stunning views of the valley with mud roof houses in the village of Tetang before reaching the village. It's better to stay at Chhuksang.

Day14

Trek to Muktinath from Shhusang 7-8hrs

Your trek for the day begins with an uphill climb, and you will also get to enjoy the view of Muktinath and red Buddhist monasteries from the hilltop. Further, you will be crossing Gyu La Pass (4,077m), which overlooks the stunning views of mountains, including Annapurna and Dhaulagiri.

Navigate your way through the pass, descend the stream, and cross the suspension bridge before reaching Muktinath. En route, you will find a Fossil stone locally known as ‘Saligram.’

Muktinath is an important religious place for Hindus as well as Buddhists. It is a temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu, and you will see 108 water spouts with intricate carvings. Also, visit a nearby ancient temple of Jwalamai, famous for its eternal flame of natural gas.

Day15

Trek to Jomsom via Lubra Village 6 -7hrs walk

After breakfast! You will begin the day by visiting the revered temple of Muktinath, and from here, you can savor the astounding views of Dhaulagiri. Also, you can visit a Buddhist monastery close by. Continue your trek to Panga Khola Valley and walk through dense pine forests on your way to Lubra village.

Lubra village consists of around 20 houses, and you will be walking past the 12th-century Bon Punt Soling monastery. It is one of the few remaining Bon Monasteries of Nepal. Bon religion predates Tibetan Buddhism. You can see the pictures of four Lokapalas and Buddha Shakyamuni in the monastery.

The semi-arid Lubra village lies above Jomsom, and you can see a rural lifestyle untouched by modernization. You will notice colorful strings hung on the doorways called devil traps to catch the devil at night. Continue trekking back to Jomsom overnight in the hotel.

Day16

According to the flight schedule, catch a flight back to Pokhara in the morning. Enjoy the stunning views of soaring mountains, such as Annapurna and Dhaulagiri, from your window. Essential Information

ARRIVAL AIRPORT PICK-UP

On arrival in Nepal at Kathmandu Tribhuvan International Airport, our airport representative will receive you as per your flight landing hours with your name on the display board of Nepal Spirit Adventure, then transfer you to your respective hotels in Kathmandu. Afternoon or evening time, we will review and discuss much information regarding the Upper Mustang Trek's included/excluded services as per the trip itinerary chosen, at the same time introduce your guide who will help you with the final preparation for your trek, and you may have any questions and ask about the trip. If you have a late-night flight, we will have reviews in the following days anyway. On day 2nd, you have a complete rest day while we are preparing to obtain the Upper Mustang Trekking Permit.

ACCOMMODATION

According to your booking for the Upper Mustang Trek, you will be accommodated in a 3-star hotel in both Kathmandu and Pokhara, while during the trekking period, you will stay in lodge teahouses (homestays). The city hotels and lodges will be on a twin-sharing basis. If you prefer a single room, it can be arranged upon request, but please note that there will be an additional charge. While single rooms are generally available in Kathmandu, Pokhara, and at lower elevations during the trek, they may be difficult to find at higher elevations.

MEALS

In the cities of Kathmandu and Pokhara, the package includes only breakfast. However, during the Upper Mustang Trek, three meals are provided each day. We ensure clean and hygienic food from local lodges and tea houses, based on the menu choices available.

Breakfast and dinner are served at the same tea house or lodge, while lunch is enjoyed on the trail. Each tea house offers the traditional Nepali meal, Dal Bhat (rice and lentils), along with a variety of other options such as rice, seasonal vegetables, noodles, potatoes, and soups. Some lodges also serve Western foods, including pizza, pasta, and French fries.

In most tea house restaurants, you can find a selection of soft drinks, snacks, and beer. Breakfast typically includes a variety of cereals, bread, and egg dishes.

SAFE DRINKING WATER COST

During your high-altitude trek, access to safe drinking water is crucial. We recommend consuming at least 3 to 4 liters of water daily to prevent dehydration and altitude-related issues like Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS). Whenever possible, opt for sealed packs of mineral water, which are available at local shops and lodges.

Please remember that while river, spring, and tap water may appear clean, it’s not advisable to drink them directly. Always use water purification pills or a filter to make such water safe for consumption. Boiled water is also available for purchase at every lodge.

The cost for both boiled and sealed bottled water is typically around $1 to $2 per liter, though prices can vary depending on your altitude. Be sure to budget for these additional costs when planning your trip

EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

The Upper Mustang Trek is a moderate trek ideal for enthusiastic walkers who can hike for at least 5-7 hours each day while carrying a light day pack. Walking at high altitudes is more physically demanding than at lower elevations. However, if you are in good health, possess average physical fitness, and have a positive attitude, self-confidence, and strong determination, you can complete this trek.

To enhance your strength and stability, it is advisable to engage in regular exercise and jogging for several weeks before the trip. While past hiking experience can be beneficial, no technical skills are required for this trek. Participants with pre-existing medical conditions, such as heart, lung, or blood diseases, should consult their doctor before undertaking the trek. Additionally, it is recommended that you inform Nepal Spirit Adventure of any medical conditions before booking the trek to help minimize the risks of altitude sickness.

To enhance your experience, we provide one guide to support and carry your bags for every two travelers, along with a Sherpa helper when necessary.

ACCLIMATIZATION

All of Nepal Spirit Adventure’s treks are planned with a high degree of awareness of AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness), also known as altitude sickness. Going up to a higher altitude too fast causes a medical condition serious enough to kill. We understand that for a safe trek, it is essential to allow sufficient time for acclimatization. Sensible planning is therefore required to minimize the risk of AMS.

Nepal Spirit Adventure’s itineraries are designed to prevent AMS as much as possible. But it is important to remember that some visitors are more vulnerable than others. Your guides and porters will do their best to assist you during the entire trek.

RE-CHARGING BATTERIES (electronic items)

We can recharge your batteries and devices using either electricity or solar power sources. In Nepal, the electricity supply is 220-240 volts at 50 Hz (50 cycles per second). You will need a plug adapter to fit the sockets in Nepal, which you can purchase in Kathmandu before your trip, as the plugs may be different from what you are used to. Please note that you might have to pay a small fee per hour for using the recharging facilities.

GROUP SIZE & DEPARTURE

We organize any route of Nepal trek with a fixed departure basis or private trip, the minimum group size requires 2, the maximum group size is 10 or more on request. We can also organize a private trip for a solo person with a single supplement cost. Otherwise, join our estimated group departure dates available on the online market or ask us for your personal, suitable flexible dates, as our departure dates are guaranteed, which means 100% of the trip is organized.
