Tent Peak, also known as Tharpu Chuli, stands at an elevation of 5,695 meters. It is a popular trekking peak located in Nepal's Annapurna Sanctuary. It offers breathtaking views of prominent mountains, including Annapurna I, Annapurna South, and Machhapuchhre. This peak is ideal for novice climbers who want to gain mountaineering experience. The climbing route combines the classic Annapurna Base Camp trek with technical climbing sections that require basic mountaineering skills and equipment. Typically, the ascent is made via the North-West Ridge. The best seasons for climbing are autumn (September to November) and spring (March to May).

Climbing Overview

The approach to Tent Peak follows the traditional Annapurna Base Camp trek, providing a journey that is both scenic and culturally enriching. The climb includes navigating snow slopes, glacier travel, and a final summit ridge, which generally requires basic mountaineering skills. While climbers typically use crampons, an ice axe, a harness, and rope, the ascent does not involve highly technical rock or ice climbing. From the summit, climbers are rewarded with panoramic views of Annapurna I, Machapuchare (commonly referred to as Fishtail), Hiunchuli, and other surrounding peaks.

Difficulty & Experience

Tent Peak is considered a moderate climbing option, suitable for physically fit trekkers with some prior experience in alpine or snowy conditions. It serves as a great introduction to high-altitude climbing, including acclimatization and rope techniques.

The adventure begins with a scenic overland drive from Kathmandu to Pokhara, followed by a short transfer to the starting point of the trek. From there, the trail leads to Ghorepani and onward to Poon Hill, offering one of the most spectacular sunrise views in the Himalayas, stretching from Dhaulagiri, Nilgiri, Annapurna, and Lamjung to the Manaslu range, with the iconic Machhapuchare (Fishtail) dominating the skyline.

Short Itinerary

Tent Peak Climbing Itinerary

Dear Adventure!

Our standard itinerary may vary slightly due to unforeseen circumstances and events beyond our control. Factors such as flight cancellations or delays, unfavorable weather, natural disasters, newly implemented government regulations, political situations, and trekkers’ health conditions can all affect the schedule. In these cases, we will assess the situation and explore possible solutions to help ensure the trek can continue as smoothly as possible, based on the best available alternatives. During such times, we appreciate your cooperation and flexibility.

We recommend that you arrive a day before the trip begins. This will allow you to rest and also give you time to purchase any clothing, equipment, and gear needed for the trek. It’s advisable to book your international flights with extra days in Nepal both before and after your trek to account for potential flight delays or cancellations due to weather.

Additionally, you have the option to customize your trip by adding sightseeing tours in Kathmandu, Pokhara, other adventure sports, or day trips around the country, either before or after the trek.

Day01

Your Arrival Day in Kathmandu

A representative from Nepal Spirit Adventure will meet you at the airport and escort you to our hotel. After checking in, we can either rest or explore the Thamel area, a popular tourist hub. In the evening, we will enjoy a welcome dinner featuring traditional Nepalese cuisine. We will spend the night in Kathmandu.

Day02

In Kathmandu

Today is an acclimatization day! In the afternoon, we will visit the Nepal Spirit Adventure office to meet our climbing leaders and fellow participants. During our meeting, we will discuss what to expect on our trip and check our climbing equipment. If the leaders determine that any of our gear is not in perfect condition, we may need to purchase new equipment in Kathmandu. We will relax in the evening and pack for the journey ahead. We will spend the night in Kathmandu.

Day03

Kathmandu to Pokhara by Tourist Bus (200km/7hrs)

We departed for Pokhara early in the morning on a tourist bus. Our journey primarily followed the Trishuli River. Pokhara is often referred to as “the lake city” due to the numerous lakes it features. Additionally, the views of the Himalayan peaks from Pokhara are breathtaking. In the late afternoon, we can explore Fewa Lake and enjoy a relaxing boat ride on its calm waters. We will stay overnight in Pokhara.

Day04

Drive to Nayapul then Trek to Tikhedhunga 4hrs

After breakfast, we will drive for a few hours to Nayapul, and then continue on to Bherethati, located by the Modi River. From there, our trek begins through charming villages, where we may encounter fellow trekkers as well as mule and donkey trains. Our route will lead us through farmland, villages, and past beautiful waterfalls. We will arrive at Tikhedhunga, where we will spend the night in the comfort of a cozy lodge after a rewarding day of walking.

Day05

Trek to Ghorepani Approx. 7hrs

Morning starts with a steep uphill climb on stone steps for an hour or more to reach the top of Ulleri village, moderate size villages with houses in the traditional Nepalese style of slated roofs. From here walk leads with a gradual, slow climb into an enchanting, cool rhododendron and pine-forested area to reach Ghorepani village, located on a ridge surrounded by beautiful rhododendron trees. This village is inhabited mostly by Poon people of the Magar tribe and is famous for the Poon Hill view, which is an hour climb.

Day06

Hike to Poon Hill (3210m) Trek to Tadapani 6hrs Walk

Early morning climb to the top of Poon Hill to catch the stunning sunrise over an array of Himalayan peaks from the world's 7th highest Dhaulagiri, 10th highest Annapurna, with a range of peaks including world's 8th highest Manaslu with majestic Machhapuchare peak “Fish Tail”. After enjoying exciting moments, head back to Ghorepani and continue trek with uphill and downhill through the cool forest, then reach Tadapani for an overnight stop.

Day07

Trek to Chomrong from Tadapani 6hrs

From this peaceful place, walk downhill into the cool forest of rhododendron and pine trees to Kimrong valley. After Kimrong valley, an uphill climb for an hour to reach the top of Chomrong village, and then a short downhill to the main Chomrong village for overnight, this is the last permanent Gurung village and the gateway to Annapurna Base Camp and Sanctuary trekking.

Day08

Approximately 5hrs Trek to Dobhan

Today, we descend to the Chhomrong Khola as we continue our climb to Khuldighar, which is at an elevation of 2,380 meters. This area used to have an Annapurna Conservation Area (ACAP) Check Post. A bit further along, there is a clearing in the forest. After this clearing, the trail steeply descends along a rocky bank. It then levels out, passing through bamboo thickets at the bottom of the gorge on the west side of the river. After five and a half hours of walking, we arrive at Dovan.

Day09

Trek to Deurali approx. 5hrs Walking

Today, we will only walk for four hours due to the high altitude and the risk of snow avalanches in the area; we will cross the next morning. Our day starts with a climb through bamboo and rhododendron forests, leading us to the Himalayan Hotel and then on to Hinko Cave. Deurali is situated on a ridge above Hinko, along a stretch of trail that is particularly susceptible to avalanches.

Day10

Deurali to Machhapuchre Base Camp 3-4hrs Trek

After about a half-hour walk from Deurali, we will find ourselves in the middle of a riverbed surrounded by towering, snow-covered mountains. The hike to Machhapuchre Base Camp is somewhat strenuous, but the breathtaking views of the majestic Machhapuchre make it worthwhile. We will enjoy sights of Mt. Hiunchuli, Annapurna South, Annapurna I, Annapurna III, Gangapurna, and, of course, the iconic Fishtail, or Machhapuchhre itself. We will spend the night at Machhapuchre Base Camp.

Day11

Acclimatization and Preparation/Hike-ABC

There will be a brief meeting today where our climbing leader will discuss what to expect during the Tent Peak climb. We will also receive basic training on peak climbing techniques and learn how to effectively use climbing gear, including ice axes, climbing boots, harnesses, jumars, and ropes for ascending and descending. In addition, we will learn about various knots and equipment. Himalayan Glacier believes that this training will boost our confidence and lead to a successful summit of Tent Peak. Afterwards, we can enjoy short hikes in the area and take time to rest. We will spend the night at Machhapuchhre Base Camp.

In Option: We can also trek to Annapurna Base Camp (ABC) at 4,130 meters from Machhapuchre and back to MBC for an overnight stay. This is one of the best acclimatization exercises day hike from a low altitude to a high-altitude zone, then return to a low-altitude zone.

Day12

MBC to Cave Camp 5-6hrs Walking

We continue our journey along a trail beside the Modi Khola. After walking for a while, we catch a glimpse of the South Annapurna Glacier to our right. Although there is a trail that leads up to the base camp of Annapurna South from the glacier, we choose to press onward. We cross a bridge and continue climbing until we reach the Cave Camp, where we will spend the night.

Day13

Cave Camp to High Camp approx. 4-5hrs Trek

We ascend a steep trail to the High Camp at Tent Peak (Tharpu Chuli). Today, we will likely need to use a fixed rope and wear helmets while climbing. The ascent involves navigating a steep path at an angle of 50-60 degrees for approximately 2-3 hours, followed by walking on a glacier at a 30-degree incline. From the high camp, we are treated to panoramic views of Hiunchuli (6441m), Annapurna South (7229m), Annapurna I (8091m), Machapuchhre, and other stunning peaks. After setting up the high camp, we will spend the remainder of the day exploring the surrounding areas and preparing for our summit attempt.

Day14

Summit Tent Peak (Tharpu Chuli), return to High Camp 8/9hrs

We begin our journey to the summit around 2-3 am. We walk on a wall of rock for around 2 hours, and then we walk on flat snow for around an hour. Next, we climb on a steep slope of 70 degrees (100m). Then we walk on a flat trail for around 30 minutes and reach the summit of Tent Peak/ Tharpu Chuli. We climb on fixed ropes to reach the final summit. After conquering Tharpu Chuli, we return by the same route to the high camp. Overnight in High Camp.

Day15

Tent Peak High Camp to MBC 5hrs Trek

After enjoying a delicious breakfast, we will set out for Machhapuchhre from High Camp in the morning. Our trek will take us through beautiful rhododendron and oak forests. We will stop for lunch along the way, continuing our journey until we reach Machhapuchhre Base Camp, where we will spend the night.

Day16

Machhapuchre Base Camp to Bamboo 6hrs Trek

We will be progressively descending during this day. The trek will last approximately 6 to 7 hours and will take us to an elevation of around 2,000 meters. This journey will be both informative and extraordinary. Additionally, we will be delighted by the stunning beauty of the mountains. Throughout the trek, we may also see several peaks of the Himalayas, including Annapurna and Dhaulagiri. Finally, we will arrive at our bamboo accommodation and spend the night.

Day17

Bamboo to Jhinu Danda 6-7hrs trek

We start our journey from Bamboo, ascending to Kuldi Ghar and then continuing to Sinuwa via a steep trail. We follow the stone steps that take us to Lower Chomrong. From there, we climb the thousand stone steps leading to Upper Chomrong. After exploring Chomrong, we descend to Jhinu Danda. While we are here, we have the opportunity to relax in a natural hot spring located just 15 minutes from our accommodation. We will spend the night in Jhinu Danda.

Day18

Jhinu Dada to Naya Pul, drive to Pokhara

Day19

Drive from Pokhara to Kathmandu

After an early breakfast or packing one, we start our tourist bus drive back to Kathmandu. Most of our trip will be alongside the Trishuli River. After reaching Kathmandu, we can take a rest or catch up on last-minute souvenir shopping. We attend a farewell dinner hosted to celebrate our successful climb of the Tent Peak, also known as Tharpu Chuli, in Nepal. Overnight in Kathmandu.

Essential Information

Upon Arrival in Nepal

Upon your arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu, a representative from Nepal Spirit Adventure will greet you at the arrival terminal with a personalized name sign. You will then be transferred to your designated hotel. Later in the afternoon or evening, we will conduct a pre-trek briefing to discuss your itinerary in detail, go over included and excluded services, and introduce your trekking guide. This is also an opportunity for you to ask any questions and make final preparations for your adventure.

Accommodation in Kathmandu

We provide accommodation in comfortable 3-star category hotels in Kathmandu on a twin-sharing basis, including breakfast. If you are joining a group, you will be paired with a same-gender traveler unless a single supplement is requested. Single room supplements are available for an additional cost, both in Kathmandu and during the trek. We can also assist in booking higher-standard hotels upon request.

Accommodation During the Trek and Tent Peak Climb

Accommodation during the trek will be in traditional tea houses (mountain lodges)—a combination of guest house, restaurant, and social hub. Rooms typically include twin beds and minimal furniture. Blankets are usually provided, but we recommend bringing your sleeping bag. Bathrooms are often shared and may be either squat-style or Western toilets. Hot showers are available in most lodges for an additional fee.

During the Tent Peak climbing phase, we provide high-quality camping gear, including tents, kitchens, dining and toilet tents, mattresses, and all necessary equipment for a safe and comfortable experience.

Meals During the Trek and Climb

Your package includes full board meals—breakfast, lunch, and dinner—during the trek and climb. Meals are typically served at the tea houses, with breakfast and dinner at the lodge and lunch en route. Common dishes include traditional Dal Bhat (rice and lentils), seasonal vegetables, noodles, potatoes, soups, and, in some locations, Western options like pasta, pizza, and fries. During the climbing period, our experienced cook will prepare fresh, hygienic, and nutritious meals in camp.

Safe Drinking Water

Staying hydrated at high altitudes is essential. We recommend drinking 3–4 liters of water per day to prevent dehydration and acute mountain sickness (AMS). Though tap, spring, and river water may look clean, they are not safe to drink without purification. You can buy sealed bottled water or boiled water from lodges (approximately $2–$4 per liter, depending on altitude) or use purification tablets or filters.

Health & Fitness Requirements

Trekking and climbing in Nepal require a moderate level of physical fitness. Prior trekking experience is helpful but not mandatory. We recommend preparing with regular cardio exercise such as walking, hiking, or cycling in the weeks or months before your trip.

The highest altitude on this trip reaches 5,663 m (Tent Peak summit). You should be comfortable walking 4–6 hours a day over varying terrain. Consult with your doctor before your trip, and provide any medical information when booking.

Our Expert Trekking Crew

Nepal Spirit Adventure employs experienced, certified, and government-licensed guides and porters, many of whom have 9–10 years of experience. Our guides are trained annually in first aid, altitude management, and mountaineering safety. They provide essential cultural insights, language assistance, and expert coordination throughout your journey. For group treks, we assign a head guide and assistant guide(s) depending on group size. Porters carry up to 20–25 kg (maximum load), typically one porter per two trekkers.

Caring for Porters

Our porters are properly equipped, insured, and cared for. We strictly follow the guidelines set by the International Porter Protection Group (IPPG) and the Porter Assistance Project to ensure fair treatment, proper gear, and reasonable loads (maximum 20–25 kg per porter). Your duffel bag should not exceed this limit.

Travel Insurance

Travel insurance is mandatory. Your policy must cover medical expenses, emergency evacuation (including helicopter rescue), and loss or theft of belongings. Be sure your insurance includes coverage for trekking and climbing activities. Nepalese insurance companies do not provide travel insurance for foreign nationals, so please purchase a policy from your home country and bring the documents with you.

Charging Electronics on the Trek

Battery charging is available at tea houses using electricity or solar power. Nepal operates on 220–240 volts, 50 Hz, with plug types varying, so bring a universal adapter. Charging may cost a small fee per hour.

Risks and Liabilities

We are committed to offering the best service and a safe, memorable experience. However, we cannot be held responsible for unforeseen changes due to government regulations, weather conditions, flight delays, political unrest, or natural disasters. Any additional costs incurred due to such events will be the client’s responsibility.

Obtaining a Nepal Visa

All foreigners (except Indian citizens) require a visa to enter Nepal. You can obtain a visa:

  • On arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport (Kathmandu)

  • Or at Nepalese embassies/consulates in your home country

Most travelers get a visa on arrival at the airport, which is quick and straightforward.

Visa Fees (Tourist Visa—Multiple Entry):

- 15 Days:USD 30
30 Days: USD 50
90 Days: USD 125

Visa Extension:

- Minimum 15 days: USD 45
Additional days: USD 3/day
Late fee: USD 5/day (up to 150 days)

You can fill out the online visa form before arrival via the Department of Immigration website or use a kiosk machine at the airport. Bring two passport-sized photos and exact cash in USD.

Altitude Sickness (AMS)

Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) can occur above 3,000 meters. Common symptoms include shortness of breath, headache, and nausea. Staying hydrated and ascending gradually can help prevent AMS. Inform your guide immediately if you experience symptoms. Guides are trained to manage altitude-related issues, and your safety is their priority.

Group Size

We organize treks on both fixed departure and private group bases. The minimum group size is 2 people, and we can accommodate up to 10 or more on request. Solo travelers can join an existing group or opt for a private trek with an added single supplement fee. Let us know your preferred dates, and we can arrange a departure accordingly.
