The Upper Mustang Tour from Pokhara is more than just a destination; it is an enigmatic journey that combines spiritual discovery and cultural exploration amidst Nepal's rich medieval heritage. Beginning from the vibrant city of Pokhara, Nepal, this extraordinary 7-day adventure unveils a stunning arid landscape steeped in the serene tradition of Tibetan Buddhism. The Upper Mustang Tour from Pokhara is a short trip to the restricted Himalayan wonderland, offering travelers a unique and different aspect of Nepal’s rich topography.

“The Mars of Nepal,” nestled in an isolated northern Trans-Himalayan region of Nepal, provides a rare opportunity for a limited number (1000+ per year) of history buffs, adventurers, soul-searchers, and religious believers to engage with the rich heritage of ancient civilization.

Why is Upper Mustang the Crown Jewel of Nepal’s Hidden Treasures?

Before 1992, outsiders were restricted from traveling and exploring the isolated region of Nepal, i.e., the Upper Mustang, which earned its renowned title, “The Forbidden Kingdom of Nepal”.

The Lost Kingdom of Lo echoes the rich history of the Upper Mustang, a region once ruled by the revered Lo Dynasty. For over 600 years, this Buddhist monarchy flourished, transforming the area into a vibrant trade hub on a crucial route between Tibet and India. Today, the ancient trail still beckons travelers, accessible through the enchanting Kora La, inviting all to explore its storied past.

In addition, approximately 10,000 caves have been discovered to date, clinging to the Cliffside, which dates back over 3,500 years and is at an elevation close to the blue sky. No wonder people consider them “Sky Caves of the Himalayas”. These caves are one of the greatest archaeological enigmas of Nepal. A few prominent names include Chungsi Cave, Chhosar (Jhong) Caves, Luri Gompa, Ritseling Cave, and so on.

In a remarkable 2008 expedition led by the National Geographic team, the Samdzong cave and its surroundings revealed an extraordinary trove of discoveries.  Among the treasures unearthed were ancient manuscripts, a stunning 1,500-year-old mummy adorned with gold masks, and the intriguing remains of a 10-year-old child.

Various welcoming and stunning villages such as Marpha, Chimang gaun, Kagbeni, Samar, Syanboche, Ghami, Charang, and so on, crafted with traditional art, stand as a gateway to Lo Manthang. The serene and surging Rupse Jharana(waterfall), towering at a height of 300 meters (984 feet), attracts and adds joy to your trip. Nepal's sacred Hindu-Buddhist pilgrimage site, Muktinath temple, is situated at 3,800 meters, where 108 pure tap water purifies one's lifetime committed sins. You can explore and visit the astonishing, mysterious,3-storage natural Chunsi cave, where, in the 8th century, Guru Rinpoche blessed and purified the region through meditation.

Reasons Why Upper Mustang Outshines Every Other Tour in Nepal.

• Exclusivity and Seclusion: Unlike the bustling trails of Nepal, Everest Base Camp, or Annapurna Circuit, Upper Mustang limits visitor numbers, ensuring a crowd-free experience. This limitation is brought through a special permit granted to only governmentally registered Nepali Trekking companies.

• Surreal Landscapes: The Upper Mustang tour takes you to dramatic red cliffs, wind-sculpted rocks, and innumerable mysterious caves that hold thousands of years of history.

• Cultural Preservation: Unlike other trails of Nepal, the Upper Mustang remains untouched and preserved via the Loba people upholding their ancient tradition. And this can be seen reflected in their way of living. The Tiji festival and 15th-century monasteries (Thubchen Gompa) are key thriving elements.

• Lower Altitude Risks: The maximum altitude you can gain is 3,840m (Lo Manthang), reducing acute mountain sickness risk. But in contrast to others, like Everest Base Camp, 5,364m, there is a high probability of altitude sickness.

• Historical Trade Routes: Along with the exploration of tombs and meditation cells along the trails.

• Starry Skies and Golden Hour Paradise.

When to Visit Upper Mustang: Pursue Perfect Weather and Vibrant Festivals?

Upper Mustang has a unique climate due to its location in Nepal’s Himalayan rain shadow, which makes the Upper Mustang an accessible year-round travel destination. Each season nurtures visitors with distinct experiences. Generally, the best time to visit Upper Mustang is the spring and autumn seasons, according to travelers.

The Spring Season welcomes you with clear skies and panoramic views of the majestic Dhaulagiri and Annapurna ranges. What enhances it is a blossoming desert flora, including wildflowers and fields of buckwheat, creating an enchanting spectacle.

During the autumn season, the trails are dry with panoramic mountain vistas due to the monsoon clarity. This makes it the perfect time for motorbike enthusiasts and determined trekkers

The monsoon and Winter Seasons are not considered the best times or off-season to travel because of risky road access due to rain, frequent delays in flights, and limited availability of tea houses, respectively.

What is the Tiji Festival, why is it special in Lo Manthang, Nepal, and when should you attend?

Tiji festival is an annual traditional Buddhist ritual performed by monks of the Chode Monastery for three consecutive days in the walled kingdom of Upper Mustang known as “Lo Manthang”

This colorful event features the intricate masked dance delivering the triumph of good (historically, the deity Dorje Jono) over evil through a series of ancient chants and vibrant ceremonies. Tiji Festival offers a rare glimpse into the preserved Tibetan Buddhist culture of the Himalayas.

The Tiji festival is celebrated on different dates each year, but May is the ideal month to experience its vibrant festivities. Therefore, this event beautifully aligns with Nepal’s enchanting spring trekking season, offering visitors the experience of a unique cultural tradition of Lo Manthang and Himalayan adventure.
