Although the tour lasts just one day, it immerses you in events that shaped history long ago. This experience combines visits to the two most significant historical sites in Nepal, showcasing the culture, traditions, arts, and architecture that have thrived since ancient times.
Exploring these cities on foot is the best way to appreciate their charm. Strolling through the small alleyways connecting various courtyards is both interesting and fascinating. Take the time to wander around the Durbar Squares of Patan and Bhaktapur, where you can admire historical photographs, monuments, and artwork displayed in museums.
Unfortunately, these remarkable landmarks often do not receive the attention and appreciation they deserve for their incredible artistry and architectural beauty.
Explore the remarkable landmarks of Nepal to deepen your understanding of its historical significance. The magnificent buildings, featuring stunning craftsmanship, are truly awe-inspiring to discover. During this one-day retreat, you will experience the vibrant atmosphere of Bhaktapur and Patan Durbar Square, engaging with both locals and tourists. Additionally, you will gain insights into exquisite artworks while immersing yourself in the ambiance of medieval times. Below, we have outlined what you can expect to see on this day trip.
Sights to See in Bhaktapur Durbar Square
Bhaktapur is one of Nepal's well-preserved medieval cities, home to vibrant ancient artworks that tell stories from a bygone era. There are numerous attractions to explore and lessons to learn from the intricate carvings on the wood of its temples and buildings. While you are in Bhaktapur, be sure to visit the following places:
Nyatapola Temple of Taumadhi Tole
The Nyatapola Temple, located in Taumadhi Tole, is a remarkable structure that you will see as you approach Durbar Square. Standing at over 30 meters tall with five stories, it is the tallest temple in Nepal and one of the highest buildings in the Kathmandu Valley. The entire temple features intricate woodwork and beautifully detailed craftsmanship. Built in 1702 during the reign of King Bhupatindra Malla, the temple was constructed so sturdily that it only sustained minor damage during the 2015 earthquake.
Bhairabnath Temple
The Bhairabnath Temple, with its iconic board-front and triple roof, is located in the Taumadhi Tole (yard) and is dedicated to Bhairab, a fearsome manifestation of Shiva. To the north of the temple, two large wooden wheels are stacked. These wheels are used during the Bisket Jatra festival to haul the god Bhairav around the town. In addition to this, there are many other interesting things to observe around the temple.
Til Mahadev Narayan Temple
The double-tiered temple located in front of the elegant kneeling Garuda statue is the third notable temple in Taumadhi Tole. It is somewhat hidden behind the buildings at the south end of the square. Although the sanctuary is situated on a chaotic patio, it remains one of the important temples for pilgrims, despite its less prominent location.
Pottery Square
Pottery Square is nestled behind the back streets as you drive south from the winding road to Taumadhi Tole. Contrary to what you might expect, it is not a vast open square; instead, it is alive with treadle-powered potters and clusters of mud pots drying in the sun. This vibrant area serves as the heart of Bhaktapur's artistic industry and is a fascinating place to explore.
Durbar Square
Bhaktapur’s Durbar Square is one of the busiest places in the city. Surrounding the square, you will find numerous temples, statues, shrines, and monuments. The royal palace occupies the northern half of the square.
These are just a few of the major attractions at Bhaktapur Durbar Square that you should not miss while visiting. There are many other interesting sights and locations in the area that are worth exploring as well.
Patan Durbar Square: Sights to See
Patan was once a fiercely independent city-state; however, it is now a suburb of Kathmandu, separated by the murky Bagmati River. Here, you can explore some of the finest architectural temples, paintings, and courtyards in all of Nepal.
Durbar Square:
The historic Royal Palace of Patan offers a stunning glimpse into medieval Nepal. This collection of temples represents one of the most visually impressive displays of Newari architecture in the country, even after recent renovations. Construction in the square flourished during the Malla period, particularly under the reign of King Siddhinarsingh Malla. The palace showcases exceptional artistry in iron, bronze, and wood.
Patan Museum:
The Patan Museum, formerly the residence of the Malla Kings, is located within the castle segment that includes Keshav Narayan Chowk. It boasts one of the finest collections of religious art in Asia. The museum showcases the artistic heritage, iconography, and architecture of the Kathmandu Valley. The exhibits are displayed in a series of brick and wooden rooms connected by steep, narrow staircases.
Beyond the museum, there are many fascinating temples and sites to explore around Durbar Square. Notable attractions include the Taleju Temple, various chowks, the Bhimsen Temple, and the Taleju Bell, along with numerous other interesting sites.
Krishna Mandir (Temple)
The Krishna Temple is another attraction to see in Patan city. As you walk further into Durbar Square, you will come across the magnificent Krishna Mandir. The term "mandir" translates to "temple" in English. Please note that non-Hindus are not permitted to enter the temple. This sanctuary was constructed by King Siddhinarsingh Malla in 1637, and it is notable for being built from cut stone rather than the typical brick and timber. This remarkable architectural gem reflects the traditional style of Indian temple design. The temple stands out as one of the most prominent landmarks in the valley and is often depicted on the ornate metal lamps found in many Nepali homes.
Visiting both palaces offers insight into the rich cultural heritage of Nepal. Enjoy the beautiful arts and designs during your tour, while also delving into the extensive history associated with these palaces. A Bhaktapur and Patan Day tour with Nepal Hiking Team provides an incredible opportunity to discover the deeper historical and artistic aspects of Nepal.
