The Poon Hill Trek from Pokhara is another short mountain view trekking trail in the Annapurna region. This trek is the best holiday for families and beginner travelers because it does not require hard physical fitness. The Poon Hill Trekking package is start and end from Pokhara Phewa Lake, the city that is known as the mountain kingdom in Nepal and it's a natural beautiful place, where visitors can easily visit and enjoy various activities.

Travelers can embark on the Poon Hill trek at any time of the year, and it does not require the same level of mental and physical preparation as the Everest Base Camp Trek in the Solukhumbu district. This trek can be completed in a shorter period, making it ideal for beginners and families. The highest point on the trek is Poon Hill, which stands at 3,210 meters and offers a unique viewpoint for witnessing spectacular sunrises and panoramic views of the stunning Annapurna Himalayan range.

As you trek, you'll pass through beautiful forests of rhododendrons in the Annapurna Conservation Area and encounter the insightful local communities of Magar and Gurung villages along the way.

How We Can Start Poon Hill Trek From Pokhara

Nepal Spirit Adventure's experienced crew will lead you on this trek from Pokhara, meet at your hotel, and then drive to Nayapul by private vehicle (about 42km) for an approximately 2-hour ground journey. The new bridge-Nayapul is the starting point of the Poon Hill Trek, Trekkers have the option to ride up to Hille and hike to Ulleri for a more personalized trek itinerary but we suggest it's better if we stay at Tikhedhung on the first day, which is about a 4-hour trek from Nayapul.

On the second day, we trek to Ghorepani. It is quite a long day hike, but you’ll enjoy the trek through quaint villages and the unique ethnic local cultures of Magar and Gurung communities; up many stairs, through thick jungles, and over rivers; before ultimately ending up at an altitude (3,210 m in the local village. While you start the trek from Trikhedhunga, we ascend 3,300 steps until Ulleri Magar village, which rewards us with great views of the Himalayas hiding in the shade of the trees.

From the Ulleri, you can see the first mountain views of Machhapuchhre and Hiunchuli with the attractive, magnificent thick forest of the Annapurna Conservation Area. We could stop for a lunch break there or trek toward Banthanti. After the wonderful lunch break, continue trekking to Ghorepani 2,850m through dense rhododendron forest and capture the perfect picture of the landscapes. If you get the holiday in March to May, which is the spring season, this trek route will be colorful blooming spring flowers, especially rhododendron in verities colors. Feeling a long day trek of approximately between 6-7 hours then arriving at Ghorepani village, we highly recommend staying overnight at Ghorepani Deurali for the best Annapurna Himalayan ranges and natural open forest views also a short walk for a hike to Poon Hill for the next morning.

Is A Permit Compulsory for Poon Hill Trek, How Much Cost It?

When trekking to Ghorepani Poon Hill, obtaining a trek permit is mandatory for everyone, whether you are part of a group, on a private trip, or traveling solo. This permit is also referred to as the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP). You can acquire the permit in either Kathmandu or Pokhara.

If you are hiking with an organized tour group from Nepal Spirit Adventure, the cost of the trek permit is included in your package, and your trek guide will manage all the details for you.

For those trekking independently, the permits will cost around USD 22-23. Specifically, the ACAP permit is priced at USD 23 (NPR 3,000) per person. It is essential to carry these permits with you at all times during the trek, as they will be checked at various checkpoints along the way. Additionally, make sure to bring a minimum of four passport-sized photos for the permit application.

When Is The Best Season for The Poon Hill Trek?

The ideal time to embark on the Poon Hill Ghorepani Trek is from the last week of August to December and from the last week of February to June. While it is possible to hike in January, be aware that winter conditions can result in icy trails, with temperatures potentially dropping below -15°C. January and February can provide excellent trekking conditions.

June and July mark the onset of the monsoon season, leading to an increase in rainy days. If you wish to see the famous rhododendrons in full bloom, April is the best month for this hike. We believe this is the optimal time to trek Poon Hill Ghorepani, as the views are spectacular and the weather is comfortable.

The autumn season, from October to December, is particularly favorable for this adventure. During this time, the weather is perfect, with cool mornings and evenings complemented by warm temperatures throughout the day. Clear skies provide stunning mountain views along the trek, especially from Poon Hill (3,210 meters), Tadapani, and Ghorepani, allowing for close-up vistas of the mountains when the weather is good.

This trek is suitable for all categories of travelers and is less demanding physically and mentally compared to other trekking regions in Nepal.

You can continue the trek to Ulleri, which is approximately a 2-hour walk from Tirkhedhunga. Completing this today will make it more comfortable and shorten the walking distance for the hike on the next day.

Day02

Trek from Tikhedhunga to Ghorepani

Today, we have a long and demanding trek ahead of us! After breakfast, we will start our journey from Tikhedhunga a bit earlier than usual, as it’s going to be a big day of walking. Our first stop will be crossing the suspension bridge over the Bhurungdi River, followed by a hike to Ulleri, a village inhabited by the Magar community, where we will climb a series of stone stairs.

As we continue our trek, we’ll explore beautiful rhododendron forests, lush meadows, cultivated fields, and small streams. Keep an eye out for various birds along the way, including redstarts, kingfishers, dippers, fork-tailed by the river, as well as magpies and treepies in the cultivated areas.

The trail will lead us through the settlement of Nangethanti, eventually reaching our destination, Ghorepani. This village is situated on a ridge surrounded by stunning rhododendron trees and is primarily inhabited by the Poon people of the Magar tribe. Ghorepani is renowned for the breathtaking views from Poon Hill, which is just an hour’s climb away. From Ghorepani Deurali, we can enjoy magnificent views of the Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, Nilgiri, and Hiuchuli mountain ranges, among others.

Day03

Hike to Poon Hill (3,210 m) trek to Tadapani

Today promises to be one of the most beautiful days of our trekking expedition. We will start early to witness the breathtaking sunrise from the hilltop of Poon Hill (3,210 m/10,531 ft). This magical moment, when the golden rays of the sun illuminate the towering peaks of Mt. Dhaulagiri (8,167 m/26,794 ft), the Annapurna massif (including Annapurna I, II, III, IV, and Annapurna South), Mt. Machhapuchhre, also known as Fishtail Mountain (6,997 m/22,956 ft), Dhampus Peak (6,021 m/19,753 ft), and Tukuche Peak (6,920 m/22,703 ft), is truly indescribable and worth the 45-minute uphill climb to the summit. Capturing this moment will provide memories to cherish for a lifetime.

After descending to Ghorepani, we'll enjoy a hot breakfast before continuing our trek to Tadapani after lunch. As we progress, we will navigate through vibrant rhododendron forests, which are particularly stunning in spring. Along the ridge, surrounded by pine and rhododendron trees, we will reach Deurali, and then a further descent will lead us to Tadapani.

Day04

Trek from Tadapani to Ghandruk

The trek becomes increasingly beautiful as we progress along the trail. Initially, we descend steep paths that lead us through stunning rhododendron forests. The beauty of this forest, especially when the rhododendron flowers are in bloom, enhances the charm of the trail. As we continue, the blossoms of cherry trees further enrich our surroundings. Eventually, we reach the village of Ghandrung, the second-largest Gurung settlement in Nepal, which offers valuable insights into the lifestyles of the villages that have traditionally supported the famous Gurkha regiments.

In Ghandrung, we are treated to breathtaking views of Fishtail, Hiunchuli, and Annapurna South, along with the Gurung Museum, which is another highlight of the visit. Take a moment to appreciate the rich Gurung culture that thrives in this village.

Day05

Trek to Nayapul, Drive to Pokhara

Today marks the final day of our trek. We will enjoy beautiful overnight and morning views of the Himalayas as we make a gradual descent down stone steps that lead through the farm terraces surrounding Kimche village. The descent will conclude at Syauli Bazaar. From there, we will follow the Modi River downstream to Bhirethati and Nayapul, where we will take a private vehicle back to Pokhara. The trek will take approximately 5 hours, followed by a 2-hour drive to Pokhara.

Please note: If you prefer not to trek to Nayapul, alternative transportation is available from Ghandruk Phedi for an additional cost (bus or jeep).
