Required Equipment for the Upper Mustang Tour
When preparing for the Upper Mustang tour, it's essential to consider the equipment you'll need. While individual preferences vary, the most important factor is ensuring you have enough clothing to deal with the cold weather in the Himalayas. Below is a general list of personal items you should bring for your adventure jeep tour on the Upper Mustang Trans Himalaya route.
Clothing and Gear
Down Jacket: (1) Mornings and evenings can get quite cold, depending on the season. A high-quality down jacket is essential for staying warm on the trails. If you don’t already have one, you can rent or purchase a down jacket in Kathmandu or Thamel Bazaar.
Fleece Jacket/Sweater: (1) It's advisable to bring two fleece jackets or sweaters—one lightweight for daytime and one medium-weight for the evenings when you'll be in the hotel.
Lightweight Windproof Jacket: (1) A lightweight windproof jacket is a must, as the trails to Upper Mustang can be very windy. This jacket is compact and won’t take up much space in your luggage, but it is incredibly useful during the journey.
Fleece Pants: Don't forget to pack fleece pants for wearing in the teahouse or hotel during the cold mornings and evenings. Ensure that they are of good quality to keep you warm.
Light Hiking Trousers: (1) You will need light hiking trousers during the jeep drive and exploration around the villages and monasteries. This will be very useful as it is lightweight and easy to carry while walking. It will be better if the trousers are water/windproof for better performance.
Pair of Shorts: (1) A pair of shorts is always a good option on a jeep tour. As you have to drive a long way to Upper Mustang and return, you can wear a pair of shorts during the daytime or during the drive. A pair of shorts makes your walk move more easily and hassle-free.
T-shirts: 2 T-shirts are compulsory for the tour, but travelers can pack an extra 1-2 as their requirements. Also, remember to pack quick-dry woolen ones as cotton t-shirts are too thin and not suitable.
Long-Sleeve Shirts: 2 long-sleeve quick-dry shirts to wear during the morning and evening.
Inner wear: Thermal inner wear is compulsory because it will be very cold, and this helps you to warm your body from the inside.
Pairs of Socks: (4) pairs of socks should be packed (or more, as travelers need). They should be of good quality. It is better to pack two pairs of cotton socks and two pairs of wool socks.
Light Shoe/Sandal: 1 light pair of shoes/sandal to wear in the hotel.
Hiking Shoe: A pair of hiking shoes to be worn during the trip. It should be of good quality and with good ankle support. You do not have to walk for a long time, but during the exploration of villages, temples, and monasteries, short hikes are performed. A light, waterproof hiking shoe is a better option.
Sun Hat: A wide-brimmed sun hat to protect yourself from the sun during the daytime.
Warm Hat: A warm woolen/fleece hat to protect you from cold and wind.
Sunglasses: A pair of sunglasses with polarizing lenses to prevent glare due to sunlight.
Warm Gloves: A pair of woolen/fleece gloves to protect you from the cold and keep your hands warm. A pair of gloves with a waterproof outer shell will be better. (Useful during snowy weather)
Nightwear: A pair of nightwear or pajamas.
Swimming Suit: On the way to Upper Mustang, there is a natural hot spring where you can dip your body in the hot water and relax. So, a swimsuit should be packed to experience the hot water spring.
(Note: You can simply hire or purchase this equipment around Thamel Bazaar at a reasonable price.)
Miscellaneous
Head Torch: Taking a head torch with you during the trip can be very useful. It can be used during cave exploration as well as during nighttime while exploring around the villages. Some places do not have reliable electricity services; hence, a head torch can be useful in such places.

Solar Charger/Power Bank: Packing a solar charger/power bank is always a good option while traveling to Upper Mustang, as some parts of the trip do not have reliable electricity. With the help of such a charger/power bank, you can overcome such problems and do not have to rely on the teahouses for charging purposes. Also, most of our vehicles have charging ports too.
Pocket/Swiss knife: A pocket/Swiss knife can be useful for different purposes on a trip, and it does not occupy much space in the baggage.

Hiking Poles: Hiking poles are not compulsory, as it is not a trek. Travelers do not have to walk for a long time, but they have to ascend and descend in some places on foot, where these hiking poles can be useful for those who have a problem walking up and down. (If you are required, we also provide a good one in Kathmandu.)
