Enjoy a delicious hot breakfast at Fish Fishtail Lodge before embarking on a scenic drive to Kalopani via Beni and Tatopani. We will start our journey in the morning, and the road will offer stunning mountain views throughout the trip.

Kalopani, also known as Kobang, is situated in the Kali Gandaki River valley and serves as the primary gateway to Mustang. Along the highway, you will witness breathtaking views of the Himalayan ranges, local villages, and the world’s deepest gorge, the Kaligandaki.

Upon arriving at Gasa Kalopani, you'll have a closer view of Annapurna I, which stands at 8,091 meters. Finally, we will reach our camp in Kobang, where we will enjoy an overnight stay at the Lodge Thasang Village Resort.

Day05

Drive to Muktinath from Kobang

Today is a beautiful day, and we are embarking on a short scenic trip through the Himalayas, specifically along the Kaligandaki Valley. Our journey will take us to the old Tukuche and Marpha villages, where we can explore the apple gardens, and then we will visit Kagbeni before heading to Muktinath.

Historically, Kagbeni served as an essential stop for traders transporting goods between Nepal and other regions. There is a checkpoint in Kagbeni where officers check all groups traveling to the Muktinath and Mustang areas. You will need to show your special permits at this checkpoint before you can proceed further.

As we drive deeper into Kagbeni, you will notice the landscape changing from green rolling hills to dry, grey-white rocky terrain. The influence of Tibetan culture becomes more prominent here, making the area feel more like Tibet than Nepal. Kagbeni was designed like a fortified town and played a significant role in the past when people traded salt between Tibet and Nepal.

When you arrive in Kagbeni, you can stroll along the stone streets and see prayer wheels attached to the walls of small temples and religious buildings. Don’t miss the opportunity to visit "the Red Monastery," which features striking red walls and resembles a massive block of stone. After our visit, we will take about a one-hour drive to Muktinath, where we will spend the night at the Lo Mangham Resort.

Day06

Jeep Drive from Muktinath to Charang

In the morning session, we will visit the Muktinath Temple, which is surrounded by 108 water taps that provide holy water. We will also explore a local Buddhist monastery and enjoy sightseeing at the local market. After that, we will drive to Charang via Kagbeni, a route that takes us through bright white hills and vast empty landscapes resembling a desert.

Charang is located just south of Lo Manthang, the main walled city of the Mustang Kingdom, and this village is rich in history and culture. During our visit, you will see a fort known as a Dzong, numerous religious towers called stupas, as well as houses made from stone and mud bricks, and a well-known monastery. The area is arid and desert-like, offering stunning views of the Himalayan Mountains and the deep Kali Gandaki Valley.

Upon reaching Charang, you can explore the monastery, where the interior walls are adorned with bright painted images of the Medicine Buddha Mandala. These paintings hold significant importance in Mustang's religious life, and similar artworks can be found in nearly every village in the region.

The monastery continues to host religious ceremonies and prayers that the local community considers essential. You will also have the opportunity to observe how people maintain their traditional lifestyles, including food cultivation, prayer ceremonies, and the upkeep of ancient buildings that have stood for hundreds of years.

Day07

Drive/ Hike to Luri Cave – return

Today is a very important day! After breakfast, we’ll either drive or hike, depending on your interest. Our destination is the Luri Cave, which is one of the highlights of the Upper Mustang Jeep Tour Packages. The Luri Gompa is located southeast of Lo Manthang and is an ancient cave system shrouded in mystery; little is known about its origins.

The Luri Cave is surrounded by sandstone rocks and cliffs that have been shaped into stunning formations by wind and weather. These cliffs contain numerous caves, and one of them houses the inner part of Luri Gompa, which serves as a hidden treasure of Buddhist art. This cave monastery is perched high above the rugged landscape, resembling an eagle's nest. It is sometimes referred to as "the Sky Cave."

As one of the last remaining cave monasteries in Lo Manthang and Tibet, the Luri Gompa has no written records indicating when it was built. It is painted in red and rests on a ledge of a cliff that is approximately one hundred meters high, making it stand out against the sandy and light-colored stone columns. It belongs to the Kagyu group of Buddhism and goes back to the 13th or 14th century.

You can catch a glimpse of the Luri Gompa from the valley below, where its mud-brick structure sits on a ledge of one of the sandstone columns. At first glance, it may seem like the only way to reach the cave is by climbing the column itself, but a winding path leads up one hundred meters to a door in a lower cave. Inside this cave, there is a notched log that you can climb to access the Gompa.

The most impressive features of the Gompa are in its inner rooms, which have been carved out and enlarged, creating smooth walls. Natural light filters in through a small window, enhancing the magical quality of the space. After exploring the cave, you will return to Charang and spend the night at the luxurious Maya's Heritage Inn.

Day08

4WD Jeep Drive from Charang to Lo Manthang

From Charang, you'll drive to Lo Manthang, the capital of the Mustang Kingdom, which is the highlight of Upper Mustang Jeep Tour Packages. The drive offers stunning views of a beautiful and unique desert landscape, featuring high hills that are unlike any other. Once you arrive in Lo Manthang, you can explore the village on foot.

Lo Manthang is rich in attractions and provides a fascinating glimpse into Tibetan Buddhist culture. The village is home to the Lhoba and Bon people and is known for its tall, white-painted mud brick walls, temples, and the King's Palace. This iconic building, which has nine corners and five floors, was constructed around the year 1400.

During your visit, you'll explore Lo Manthang's monasteries, the King's Palace, and several other significant sites. There are four main temples in Lo Manthang that you should be aware of. The Jampa Lhakhang, or Jampa Gompa, is the oldest temple, built in the early 1400s, and is commonly referred to as the "God House." The Thubchen Gompa, a large red meeting hall and temple, was built in the late 1400s and is located southwest of the Jampa Gompa. The Chodey Gompa serves as the main city temple, while the Choprang Gompa is often called the "New Gompa."

Recently, at least twelve caves were discovered north of Annapurna, near the village. These caves feature ancient Buddhist paintings and are situated on cliffs that rise to an impressive 14,000 feet.

Day09

Explore Lo Manthang, Visit Chhoser Village & Caves – return

In the morning session, we will explore the ancient Gompa and Monastery of Lo Manthang. After breakfast, we will drive to Chhoser village, where we can visit several century-old caves and a Buddhist monastery. Chosar is a beautiful, small village in Lo Manthang, adorned with stone walls and white hills that resemble ancient bones.

From Lo Manthang, the path leads past dry water channels to an old, crumbling fortress and then across a bridge through small farming areas until we reach Chhoser. As we arrive, we will see the deep-red Nyphu Gompa at Chhoser, a structure that is built right into the rock face, as if it were meticulously designed to fit there. The ghostly white hills surrounding the village look as though they were carved from hardened milk and candy.

Amazing mountains mark the beginning of Tibet, and small streams accompany us along the trail. This valley was once a major stopping point for traders on the route between Tibet and Lhasa.

Chhoser is dotted with remnants of old forts that once protected the valley from a strategic vantage point. We will spend most of the day exploring Chosar village and its caves before returning to Lo Manthang. There, we can visit the old monastery for a brief meditation session, followed by an overnight stay at the Royal Mustang Resort.

Day10

Drive to Charang – Hike to Ghar Gompa-return

The Luxury Upper Mustang Jeep Tour is renowned not only for its trans-Himalayan drive but also for the trekking opportunities it offers. Today, we will embark on a trek to Ghar Gompa, located at an altitude of 3,950 m, starting from Charang village. This hike is approximately 8-10 km both ways.

After enjoying breakfast at Royal Himalaya, we will drive to Charang and check in at Maya’s Heritage Inn. Following that, we will set out on our hike to the famous Ghar Gompa. This ancient monastery sits about three hours away from Charang and is the oldest monastery in all of Mustang, dating back to the 8th century. It was established by Guru Rinpoche, the founder of Tibetan Buddhism.

Legend has it that the Gompa covers the heart of Balmo, a female giant whom Guru Rinpoche defeated in a significant battle during the 8th century. The monastery is situated just past the small settlement of Lo Gekar.

Ghar Gompa features stunning paintings that depict intricate stories and legends about gods and malevolent spirits. The entrance to the Gompa is flanked by the Four Guardian Kings, and inside the temple, you will find beautifully painted and carved stones, as well as statues of Guru Rinpoche, Palden Lhamo riding a horse, and Vajrapani.

Additionally, there are numerous Tsa Tsa carvings surrounding the prayer wheels at Ghar Gompa. After exploring the monastery and learning about its rich history, we will hike back to Charang.

Note: If you do not prefer hiking/trekking to Ghar Gompa, we will take a jeep drive (while the jeep is with us).

Day11

Charang - Jomsom approximately 37 to 40 kilometers, today we will do sightseeing along the way back to Jomsom. For this reason, it may take 7-8 hours, and driving directly would not take much!

Your journey from Charang begins with a jeep ride to Jomsom, taking you through several remote villages. You'll pass through Jaite, Shyangbochen, Vena, Samar, Chhusang, and Kagbeni, each offering a unique glimpse into traditional Mustang life.

Equipments

Required Equipment for the Upper Mustang Tour

When preparing for the Upper Mustang tour, it's essential to consider the equipment you'll need. While individual preferences vary, the most important factor is ensuring you have enough clothing to deal with the cold weather in the Himalayas. Below is a general list of personal items you should bring for your adventure jeep tour on the Upper Mustang Trans Himalaya route.

Clothing and Gear

Down Jacket: (1) Mornings and evenings can get quite cold, depending on the season. A high-quality down jacket is essential for staying warm on the trails. If you don’t already have one, you can rent or purchase a down jacket in Kathmandu or Thamel Bazaar.

Fleece Jacket/Sweater: (1) It's advisable to bring two fleece jackets or sweaters—one lightweight for daytime and one medium-weight for the evenings when you'll be in the hotel.

Lightweight Windproof Jacket: (1) A lightweight windproof jacket is a must, as the trails to Upper Mustang can be very windy. This jacket is compact and won’t take up much space in your luggage, but it is incredibly useful during the journey.

Fleece Pants: Don't forget to pack fleece pants for wearing in the teahouse or hotel during the cold mornings and evenings. Ensure that they are of good quality to keep you warm.

Light Hiking Trousers: (1) You will need light hiking trousers during the jeep drive and exploration around the villages and monasteries. This will be very useful as it is lightweight and easy to carry while walking. It will be better if the trousers are water/windproof for better performance.

Pair of Shorts: (1) A pair of shorts is always a good option on a jeep tour. As you have to drive a long way to Upper Mustang and return, you can wear a pair of shorts during the daytime or during the drive. A pair of shorts makes your walk move more easily and hassle-free.

T-shirts: 2 T-shirts are compulsory for the tour, but travelers can pack an extra 1-2 as their requirements. Also, remember to pack quick-dry woolen ones as cotton t-shirts are too thin and not suitable.

Long-Sleeve Shirts: 2 long-sleeve quick-dry shirts to wear during the morning and evening.

Inner wear: Thermal inner wear is compulsory because it will be very cold, and this helps you to warm your body from the inside.

Pairs of Socks: (4) pairs of socks should be packed (or more, as travelers need). They should be of good quality. It is better to pack two pairs of cotton socks and two pairs of wool socks.

Light Shoe/Sandal: 1 light pair of shoes/sandal to wear in the hotel.

Hiking Shoe: A pair of hiking shoes to be worn during the trip. It should be of good quality and with good ankle support. You do not have to walk for a long time, but during the exploration of villages, temples, and monasteries, short hikes are performed. A light, waterproof hiking shoe is a better option.

Sun Hat: A wide-brimmed sun hat to protect yourself from the sun during the daytime.

Warm Hat: A warm woolen/fleece hat to protect you from cold and wind.

Sunglasses: A pair of sunglasses with polarizing lenses to prevent glare due to sunlight.

Warm Gloves: A pair of woolen/fleece gloves to protect you from the cold and keep your hands warm. A pair of gloves with a waterproof outer shell will be better. (Useful during snowy weather)

Nightwear: A pair of nightwear or pajamas.

Swimming Suit: On the way to Upper Mustang, there is a natural hot spring where you can dip your body in the hot water and relax. So, a swimsuit should be packed to experience the hot water spring.

(Note: You can simply hire or purchase this equipment around Thamel Bazaar at a reasonable price.)

Miscellaneous

Head Torch: Taking a head torch with you during the trip can be very useful. It can be used during cave exploration as well as during nighttime while exploring around the villages. Some places do not have reliable electricity services; hence, a head torch can be useful in such places.

Binoculars: As you are heading towards the district beyond the Himalayas, you will witness various mountain peaks and ranges. A binocular can be used to look closer at the Himalayas and its summit.

Solar Charger/Power Bank: Packing a solar charger/power bank is always a good option while traveling to Upper Mustang, as some parts of the trip do not have reliable electricity. With the help of such a charger/power bank, you can overcome such problems and do not have to rely on the teahouses for charging purposes. Also, most of our vehicles have charging ports too.

Pocket/Swiss knife: A pocket/Swiss knife can be useful for different purposes on a trip, and it does not occupy much space in the baggage.

Reading Materials: Reading materials such as books and magazines can also be a good thing to rely on during rest days and during free time. Every hotel has a dining area where you can utilize your time reading books during free time. (Mostly in the evening)

Camera: A Camera to capture memories and photos during the trip. Also, do not forget to bring memory cards and spare batteries along with the camera.

Watch: A simple watch to know the time. It is also helpful to track the drive duration from one place to another. Though every phone has a watch, it is recommended to carry a wrist watch, which will be helpful when your phone is not charged or is dead.

Hiking Poles: Hiking poles are not compulsory, as it is not a trek. Travelers do not have to walk for a long time, but they have to ascend and descend in some places on foot, where these hiking poles can be useful for those who have a problem walking up and down.
