About Gokyo Lake Cho La Pass Trek

Gokyo Cho La Pass trek is a popular trekking route in the Khumbu region it’s led by the challenging Cho La Pass 5,420m (17,782ft), it requires physical fitness, and normally trekkers select the route first to reach Everest Base Camp and return Zongla then prepare the pass and arrives Gokyo Lake which way is quite easier from Gokyoside, this route is also popular for Everest 3 high passesand Renjo La Pass.

The trekking equipment is also an essential thing (checklist) before starting this adventure from Kathmandu, we provide a down sleeping bag, down jacket, and company duffel, if you wish to use your personal trip equipment better bring it from your country. The Gokyo Lake situated at (4,790m/15,715ft), is truly naturally beautiful, there are several lakes and the fifth lake is a more attractive lake for tourists.

The major highlight of this trek, Climb up to Gokyo Peak is a 5,357 m (17,575 ft) high peak in the Khumbu. It is located on the west side of the Ngozumpa Glacier, Nepal's largest glacier. The peak of Gokyo Ri is a small hamlet of a few stone houses and one of the highest settlements in the world. From the summit of Gokyo Ri, it is possible to see four 8,000m peaks: Mount Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyo including other Himalayan panorama. It's worth climbing this peak without peak climbing equipment.

On the trek route, after the Namche Bazaar, you will be surrounded by marvelous views of worlds high mountains Mt. Cho-Oyu (8,201m/26,906ft), Mt. Everest (8,848m/ 29,028ft) Mt. Lhotse (8,516m/24,940ft), Mt. Nuptse (7,855m/25772ft), Pumori (7161m/25,772ft), Amadablam (6,812m/22,480ft), Kangtenga (6,782m/22,380ft), Tharmarserku (6,623m/21,855ft), Kwangde (6,011m/19,837ft), Kusum Khanguru (6,373m/21,030ft), holy mountain Khumbi-la (5,761m/19,012ft) extending to world’s 5th highest Mt. Besides high mountain scenery and Sherpa culture, you will be walking into lovely forested areas of rhododendrons, pines, and fir tree lines from alpine to arctic temperature zone of barren landscapes. We start the trek with an exciting short flight to Lukla (approximately 35 minutes). Then your journey begins walk to Phakding and the famous Namche Bazaar with wonderful views of snowcapped peaks and then towards scenic Gokyo Lake surrounded by mountains and then cross Cho-la pass to reach Everest Base Camp at 5,364m.

At base camp standing beneath the world's highest peaks certainly makes you feel high with excitement, adventure continues with a climb of Kalapathar the highest spot of the adventure at 5,545 meters offering a superb panorama of mountains with Mt. Everest within mere distance. You will have a delightful exploration at the Everest Base Camp then trek continuing downhill to Namche bazaar passing Pheriche, Pangboche, Tengboche which is the top highlight point entire this itinerary, Tengboche offers a magnificent closer view of the Himalayan and old monastery is a famous spiritual in Buddhist religion.

From Namche we again trek downhill to Jorsalle, Phakding through Sagarmath National Park and arrive at Lukla then next day we will sweeping flight to Kathmandu after a remarkable time in the high mountains with great services of Nepal Spirit Adventure including its friendly staff and guide.

Early morning transfer to Kathmandu domestic airport for a short scenic flight of 35 mins to Lukla with panorama views of mountains, on reaching  Lukla with its unique airstrip start the trek towards Phakding on a good trail through traditional Sherpa farm villages with views of snowcapped peaks after a good walk of 4 hours reaching Phakding for overnight stop in a nice lodge by the bank of Dudh Kosi River.

The morning walk continues following the river upstream most of the way, crossing a few bridges over Dudh Kosi River and villages of Bhenkar and Monjo to reach Sagarmatha National Park entrance, from here leading to Jorsalle village for lunch, and then walk for a few hours to the last bridge leading with steep uphill climb for few hours to Namche Bazaar, Namche with many facilities good stores, shops, restaurant, pubs, cyber café, post office and banks.

A perfect spot for a rest day and acclimatization before heading higher area, at Namche one can relax or take a short hike to Everest View Hotel which takes almost 2 hours, or walk up to the top of Namche for better views of Everest, Amadablam and adjoining peaks, visit of interesting museum.

From here to the Gokyo area,  the walk is easy to Kyangima near Shanasa, around chances of seeing some wildlife colorful Danphe pheasant (Impeyan Pheasant) National bird of Nepal and musk deer, sometimes Himalayan Thar (mountain goat). From here our route diverts towards the north with a climb to Mong Ridge at 3,973 meters. After Mong walk descends with a series of switchbacks to Dudh Kosi at Phortse Thanghka, from here uphill to Dole, through rhododendron forest then gives way to juniper and conifers trees.

After Dole, walk on a level trail for an hour to Lhabarma Kharka at 4,325 m and to Luza at 4,390m; then skirt around the ridge line looking at Machherma village, below on a small valley, and then reach Machherma for lunch and overnight stop, afternoon free for acclimatization and short hike for views of Mt. Cho Oyo 8,210m and all the mountains flanking Ngozumba Glacier.

The morning walk leads to Gokyo Lake following a scenic trail to Pangka 4,545m, then climbing a rocky path into ablation valley reaching the first lake and then the second lake, and finally to the third lake called Dudh Pokhari or Gokyo Lake. At the bank of the lake a summer settlement of Gokyo at 4,790 meters, after lunch a short walk around the lake with a view of Mt. Cho Oyo world’s 06th highest, and Gyachung Kang which reflects on emerald Gokyo Lake.

Morning hike to Gokyo Ri (5,357m) for sweeping views of the world’s highest peaks from Mt. Cho Oyo, Gyachung Kang, Mt. Everest, Mt. Lhotse, Cholatse, Taweche, and to the east rises Mt. The walk starts before dawn with a long climb to Cho-la pass or Tsho –la as the climb leads over a rocky moraine, in snow conditions will be a tough job to find the right trail, and walk on the rubble of the moraine to reach the top of the pass at 5,367 m, hidden by Cholatse, Nirekha and Taboche peaks, after a hard climb descend to a small valley at Dzong-la for overnight stop.

After a wonderful night at Dzongla, a morning walk with an uphill climb leading to a pleasant path near Thugla (Dugla) on the junction of Pheriche, Dingboche Cho-la pass, and Lobuche trails. From here few hours of good walk to Lobuche for an overnight stop.

The morning walk leads towards our destination of this fantastic adventure to Everest Base Camp, starting with a gentle uphill climb for a few hours, and then a short steep climb near to Gorakshep walking on glacier, and moraine to reach Gorakshep with few lodges, located beneath Mt. Pumori and Kalapathar as walk continues towards east for few hours to Everest Base Camp overlooking Khumbu glacier and Khumbu Ice Fall. After a great time and feeling high beneath the world's highest mountain retrace the journey back to Gorakshep for overnight an halt.

Early morning hike to the top of Kalapathar at 5,545 meters, the highest point of this adventure as the walk leads up for a few hours offering tremendous views of surrounding snow-capped mountains as far to the horizon including Mt. Everest at close distance and beneath the towering lofty peak of Pumori. After a great time return to Gorakshep for breakfast and continue the walk to Pheriche via Thugla, from here descend to a flat windy valley, and after a pleasant walk reach Pheriche for an overnight stop.

The return journey is easier on losing altitude every few hours, walking downhill with a few short ups to Pangboche and then reaching a bridge over Imjatse River, from here into a forested area with a few hours climb to beautiful Thyangboche Monastery with a panorama of mountains including Mt. Everest and Amadablam peaks. At Thyangboche visit the famous monastery an interesting detour around monastery premises with views of mountains.

The morning walk descends to Imjatse River and then a steep climb for an hour to Sanasa with a gradual path with short ups and downs to Namche Bazaar, after a short rest at Namche with a lunch break head downhill to Dudh Kosi River and then on a gradual trail with few short up to reach at Monjo village near Sagarmatha National Park main entrance gate for an overnight stop before Lukla.

    Useful Information

    Free Airport Pick Up and Departure

    We, Nepal Spirit Adventure give you free ground transportation by private vehicle from the airport to the hotel to the airport. Who booked a trip with us, you don't need to pay for the Kathmandu arrival and departure ground vehicle.

    Kathmandu to Lukla Flight

    The travelers and trekkers reviewed the Lukla flight as dangerous but we say it is an adventurous, small airport well-known as Hillary Airport. You can see the beautiful mountain scenery and the flight journey will be approximately 35 minutes then arrive at Luka Aiprot meet other staff and begin the trek from here to Phakding. Please kindly read also during the main trek season: April-May | October to November all flights will be from Manthali-Ramechhap airport and we will provide shared transportation from Kathmandu to Ramechha to Kathmandu. Private transportation is available please deal with the manager.

    Accommodation along the Gokyo Lake Cho La Pass Trek

    We provide clean rooms and accommodations in teahouses (lodges) along the trekking route. Teahouses are basic but comfortable lodges that offer a cozy place to rest and rejuvenate after a day of trekking. Nepal Spirit Adventure ensures that the teahouses selected for your accommodation during the trek are clean, comfortable, and safe, our experienced guide will assist you in finding suitable accommodations and make the necessary arrangements to ensure your stay is pleasant.

    What kinds of meals do we expect from the trek package?

    We provide morning breakfast, lunch, and dinner three times a day, you can select each meal from the menu. Breakfast options typically include toast, eggs boiled fried or omelet, pancakes, porridge, muesli, and a hot drink cup of black tea or coffee. This hearty breakfast helps fuel your energy for the day’s walking ahead. Lunch and Dinner: The trek consists of a variety of options sandwiches, fried rice, noodles, pasta, and momo-dumplings. These meals provide a good balance of carbohydrates and proteins to keep you energized during the trekking hours.

    Equipment Checklist for Gokyo Lake Cho La Pass Trek

    We recommend the following trekking equipment, cross check this list when you are packing. If you do not have them with you from your place, remember that you can hire or buy with at a very reasonable price in Kathmandu after you arrive in Nepal.

    What you carry for the trek:
    Please, bring the equipment listed above and pack your gear for the trek into a duffel bag or rucksacks, and a small day bag for you. The larger bag with your kit will be carried by the porter to meet you each evening. You should bring a day pack to carry by yourself for water, a rain jacket, hat gloves, camera money, etc. The weather in the mountains is changeable so you will need some warm clothes with you on your day pack.
